  • I could truly drink this sauce with a spoon, it is incredibly delicious.
  • All you need is a handful of simple ingredients to make this homemade horseradish sauce recipe and it’s an easy recipe to adjust depending on your preference by making it spicier (more horseradish), creamier (more sour cream), acidic (more lemon juice) or fresh (more green onions).

Ingredients You Need To Make This Horseradish Sauce

  • Sour Cream: This is the base of the sauce. The creamy texture and slightly tart flavor is the perfect compliment to the spicy horseradish. Feel free to use either full fat or low fat sour cream.
  • Prepared Horseradish: Prepared horseradish can be found in jars at the grocery store usually located in the condiment aisle with things such as dijon mustard and cocktail sauce. Be sure to buy prepared horseradish which is just grated horseradish, salt and vinegar, and not horseradish sauce which will have other creamy ingredients in it.
  • Mayonnaise: This helps to cut through the thick sour cream. Either store-bought or homemade works.
  • Lemon Juice: I like to use fresh lemon juice as I think that it pairs really well with the sour cream base, but if you prefer a stronger acidic flavor, the lemon juice can be substituted for a vinegar such as apple cider vinegar, champagne vinegar or white vinegar.
  • Green Onions: not only do finely chopped green onions add a nice freshness to the sauce, they also add a nice pop of color. If you do not have green onions/scallions feel free to swap them for chopped fresh chives which have a slightly milder flavor.
  • Kosher Salt & Black pepper

What Is Prepared Horseradish

Prepared horseradish is a condiment that you can find in most grocery stores. Unlike store bought horseradish sauce which often contains heavy cream, eggs and lots of other additives, store bought prepared horseradish only contains grated horseradish root, vinegar and salt. It has a much more concentrated horseradish flavor and is much spicier.

Can I Use Fresh Horseradish?

If you prefer to buy fresh horseradish root and grate it to you in place of prepared horseradish you can, although the horseradish flavor may not be quite as strong so you may need to add more. Be sure to taste the sauce and adjust the amount of horseradish to suit your preference.

How To Make This Horseradish Sauce Recipe

  1. In a small bowl stir together all of the ingredients.
  2. Taste and adjust the flavors by adding more lemon juice, salt, horseradish etc as needed
  3. I like to transfer the sauce to the fridge for 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together, but if you are short on time you can serve it right away and it will still be absolutely delicious.

Is This Horseradish Sauce Spicy?

The flavor of horseradish is dominant in this sauce so there is definitely a spicy kick to it. Feel free to add more or less horseradish depending on how spicy you want the sauce to be. If the heat of the horseradish is too overpowering in the sauce, I recommend adding a touch more sour cream to help subdue it.

Can I Make This Horseradish Sauce Recipe Dairy Free?

Absolutely! To make this horseradish sauce recipe dairy free simply substitute the sour cream for a dairy free version, or alternatively you can use dairy free yogurt (or greek yogurt).

Can I Make This In Advance?

Absolutely! This horseradish cream sauce can be made up to a week in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Before serving just be sure to give the saue a really good stir to ensure its mixed well.

What To Serve With This Horseradish Sauce

This homemade creamy horseradish sauce is so incredibly versatile and can be served with so many different things. The most common way to enjoy this creamy sauce is with roast beef (such as prime rib roast), beef tenderloin or steak. I also love to spread it in steak or roast beef sandwiches, or it can really add flavor to a simple baked potato or used as a dip served alongside crispy roast potatoes. Other proteins that I love serving with this horseradish sauce include a grilled or roast pork tenderloin, salmon or even a roast chicken breast.

What About Leftovers?

Leftover horseradish sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week (and I actually find that the depth of flavor only improves after a few days of sitting in the fridge). It’s the perfect condiment to make a big batch of and have ready in the fridge to elevate any meal. I do not recommend freezing any leftover horseradish sauce as the texture will change when thawed.
