Spinach Smoothie

I don’t know why it has taken me so long to tell you about this smoothie. I first started drinking green smoothies about 6 years ago after reading a book by Kimberley Snyder and have had one almost every single day since. Over the years I have gradually modified the ingredients and quantities, and have finally settled on this version. It’s healthy, it’s simple, and it’s tasty. This Super Green Smoothie is a refreshing and nutritious drink packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Made with fresh spinach leaves, frozen ripe bananas, and orange and lemon juice, this vibrant green blend is both energizing and delicious. It’s a great way to sneak leafy greens into your diet, especially in the morning or after a workout. The creamy texture and subtle earthy flavor of the spinach are perfectly balanced by the fruit, making it a go-to choice for anyone looking to boost their daily nutrient intake.  It contains over 3 of your 4 recommended daily servings of vegetables and the entire recipe is under 140 calories.

Why You Will Love This Green Smoothie:

  • Add fresh fruit and healthy fats to boost your energy and immune system.
  • This delicious drink is a convenient way to up your vegetable intake any time of day.
  • No need to go to a smoothie shop, you can modify this to your own preferences for a fraction of the cost.
  • This healthy green smoothie recipe is naturally sweet with no added sugar.
  • It’s super kid-friendly and a great way to sneak nutrients into your kid’s diet if you have picky eaters. My girls love it!

Ingredients You Will Need:

  • Banana: Using frozen banana gives you the most yummy, creamy texture and adds a natural sweetness. You can use a fresh banana, too.
  • Spinach: Fresh baby spinach is perfect for this recipe. You can also use kale or collard greens as a substitute or addition.
  • Juices: I love the combination of fresh lemon juice and orange juice, but you could use your favorite fruit juice combination.
  • Water: You can also use your milk of choice instead of water, or even coconut water for added nutrients.

Kitchen Tools You Will Need:

  • High-Powered Blender (I love my Nutribullet)
  • Tall Glass

Freeze Your Spinach

Freeze your fresh spinach by adding it to a freezer-safe bag within two days of purchase, so it is nice and fresh.

How To Make This Green Smoothie:

Add all the ingredients to a blender or Nutribullet, starting with the liquids first and then adding the frozen ingredients. Begin with your spinach and then add the fruit on top. If using a single-serving blender, you want to load it in reverse so that when it flips over, the liquid is closest to the motor. Blend and enjoy!

Health Benefits:

Green smoothies offer a ton of health benefits, making them a popular choice for anyone trying to eat cleaner or feel more energized. Here are just a few of the things I love about a glowing green smoothie.

  • Rich in Nutrients: When packed with leafy greens like spinach or kale, plus fruits like bananas, berries, or mango, green smoothies are full of essential nutrients like vitamins A, C, and K, iron, calcium, and fiber.
  • Supports Digestion: The fiber content in fruits and vegetables helps keep your digestive system healthy and works well to improve gut health.
  • Boosts Energy: The natural sugars in the healthy ingredients give you a quick energy boost, while the greens help sustain that energy without a crash.
  • Good for Skin: The antioxidants and hydration from the smoothie can lead to clearer, more glowing skin in the most delicious way.
  • Helps Detox: The natural ingredients in green smoothies support your body’s natural detox processes, especially the liver.
  • Aids in Weight Management: They’re low in calories but can be very filling, making them a smart meal or snack choice if you’re trying to maintain or lose weight. Just be mindful of any added sugars.
  • Strengthens Immunity: With ingredients rich in vitamin C and other immune-boosting nutrients, green smoothies can help keep you feeling your best, making them the perfect breakfast.

How to Modify:

  • To change up the sweetness, you can add a bit of honey, pure maple syrup, or some of the fruit suggestions given below.
  • To make this rich and creamy, add some regular milk or a bit of Greek yogurt in place of the juice or right along with it.
  • Exchange the orange juice for apple juice or pineapple juice.
  • For a boost of nutrition, add chia seeds, flax seeds, or hemp seeds.
  • Add a scoop of your favorite collagen powder or a scoop of protein powder for a kick of protein.
  • To include healthy fats, add nut butters like peanut butter or almond butter, or seed butters, like sunflower butter or tahini. They add a delicious, thick, and creamy consistency.
  • Frozen ripe avocado is a secret superfood to add to smoothies. You can’t taste it, it adds a great amount of healthy fat, and it makes a really creamy smoothie.
  • For a bit of chunky consistency, add in coconut flakes or cacao nibs.
  • Add cinnamon or turmeric for anti-inflammatory benefits.

Dietary Customizations:

  • Dairy Free: use your favorite non-dairy milk, such as coconut milk, oat milk, or unsweetened almond milk, instead of water or juice.

Serving Suggestions:

This simple green smoothie recipe is great served alongside so many breakfast dishes, but here are a few of my favorites:

Common Questions

How do you meal prep smoothies?

Meal-prepping smoothies is actually amazingly easy. Simply take your fresh fruits and spinach, along with any add-ons you may want, and place them in a freezer-safe bag or an individual airtight container to blend with your liquids on busy mornings. Let your imagination go wild with this…spinach, apples, pears, orange wedges, hemp hearts, or nut butter. Once you do this, you won’t go back.

Can I make a green smoothie ahead of time?

Yes! Blend and store it in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just give it a good shake before drinking.

Can I add more fruit?

Yes! You will have to modify your ratios of liquid, but there are so many options. Just know that if you choose darker colored fruit, like fresh berries or cherries, which are great options, it will turn your beautiful green smoothie brown. Still delicious, just not bright and green. Frozen fruit will make it thicker and creamier, so I recommend adding slices to a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and then transferring to a bag once they are frozen.

Tastes amazing, i didn’t have orange juice so I replaced it with a peeled easy peeler, and my banana wasn’t frozen so I threw in half a room temp banana and three cubes of ice to replace the liquid lost from the lack of orange juice and to give that refreshing coolness

  2. Mary says:

What could I use instead of the banana? Thanks

  3. Sarah O says:

This is my first time trying a green smoothie and it is so delicious! I followed the recipe except used a room temp banana. Can’t really taste the greens at all. I would much rather drink this than eat a salad. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love this recipe! Any suggestions for a substitute for the orange juice. Iโ€™m trying to limit my sugar intake and orange juice is naturally so high in sugar. Thanks!!

    1. Every Last Bite says:

You could increase the amount of water and use half an apple to sweeten the smoothie. Alternatively you could use a bit of stevia or another natural sweetener.

    2. Cammie says:

Frozen grapes. Naturally sweet, plus it’s easier to measure how much you want to put in.

  5. Sandy says:

I was skeptical about this not tasting like spinach, but you were right. Very yummy and not “green” tasting at all. I used the entire frozen banana. Simple and easy to make. Love it!!

Why do you freeze the banana ? It looks very yummy !!

Freezing the banana makes the smoothie super thick and creamy, it’s so good ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Anna Heesom-Green says:

Lifematrix purple protein collagen powder is my new discovery! It originates from France so hopefully available in England ๐Ÿ™‚ I also add flax oil for an added omega boost ๐Ÿ™‚
